Austria’s population is living longer than ever before. Fresh demographic data from Statistik Austria shows a milestone that researchers have long anticipated: boys born in Austria today can expect to live more than 80 years. For girls, life expectancy remains even higher.
A Record-Breaking Number
For the first time in the country’s history, male life expectancy at birth has crossed the 80‑year threshold. According to Statistik Austria, men born in 2025 can expect to live 80.15 years, while women reach an average of 84.60 years.
This marks a new peak in longevity and reflects decades of improvements in healthcare, living standards, and disease prevention.
“The life expectancy at birth reached a new record high,” the agency noted. “This means that for men, it surpassed the threshold of 80 years for the first time.”
Population Growth Slows
Austria’s total population at the start of 2026 stood at around 9.2 million people, a slight increase compared to the previous year. But the trend is not uniform across the country.
Two federal states — Burgenland and Carinthia — recorded a decline in population numbers. Demographers point to migration patterns, ageing populations, and regional economic factors as possible drivers.
Why We’re Living Longer
Austria’s rising life expectancy aligns with broader European trends. Factors include:
- Medical advances — better treatments for chronic diseases and improved early detection
- Higher living standards — stable access to healthcare, nutrition, and social services
- Preventive health policies — vaccination programs, cancer screening, and anti-smoking measures
Still, experts caution that longevity gains can fluctuate due to pandemics, economic pressures, or regional disparities.
What This Means for Austria
Longer lives reshape society: pension systems, healthcare budgets, workforce planning, and regional development all feel the impact. Policymakers are already debating how to adapt Austria’s social infrastructure to an ageing population.
